Toolbar buttons in Word

I opened the drawing toolbar in Word, however when I
click on various command buttons such as; line style,
arrow style,dash style they are "greyed out". How do I
activate these buttons? I have tried removing command
buttons and adding them back in the customize command
option it does not work. Help, I have school assign that
I need to complete.

These buttons are not available unless you have a drawing object selected.
