When merging dates (in a UK format) from Excel, Word mail
merge changes the format to American during the process of
using the 'Merge Recipient List'.
Is there a way to stop this?

This is essentially a bug in the OLEDB Providers Microsoft
provides, and Word 2002 uses by default.
See the Word 2002 information in the mail merge FAQ on my
website for how to use something other than OLEDB to
connect to your data.
Note that Microsoft has provided a hotfix for this that you
should be able to get by calling support. But I think it
was also included in the most recent SP (Service Pack) that
you should be able to download from microsoft.com
