Automatic Bulleted Lists not working

In Word 2002, I have the Automatic bulleted lists checked
on in the AutoCorrect options. However, after a hard
return on a bulleted item, Word is not creating a new
bullet. I have to manually click the Bullet button to get
the new bullet to display.

Any ideas?

Hi Tim,

My best guess is that that Word Perfect options may be
activated in Tools/Options/General?

Afraid not. I checked and the WordPerfect options are
turned off. Thanks for the help, though.

The other possibility would be if the style being applied
to your bullet has a non-bulleted style set as the
"following style".

Disply the Styles and Formatting taskpane. Make sure the
cursor is in the bulleted line. Hover the mouse over the
box at the top, with the "preview" of your text in that
style until an arrow appears at the right of the box.

Click this arrow and choose "Modify". Is the entry for
"Style for following paragraph" different than the style
name? If it is, you can change it to the style name.

Hi Cindy,

When I click on the "Modify Style" option, "Style for
following paragraph" is not an option UNLESS I change
the "Style type" to Paragraph, instead of List (which it
is currently). And then even if I change the "Style for
following paragraph" to a bulleted style, the problem
still occurs.

The weird thing is that some of my bulleted lists do work
correctly (i.e. after a hard return, a new bullet is
automatically created), others do not. But I don't see
any difference in the formatting between the two.

Your best bet is to avoid "List styles" and set up an outline numbered list
using the instructions at

Hi Tim

Suzanne's suggestion might work for you; personally, I have
no problems with List styles. But in this case, I'm not sure
the other method would make any difference...

Even when you use a List style, "underlying" that is a
paragraph style, for example Heading 1, or maybe a
user-defined style. Do you know which PARAGRAPH style has
been applied to one of these problem areas? And can you
check the "Following paragraph style" for that? (Hint:
display the Reveal Formatting task pane and activate the
check box Distinguish Style Source at the bottom. you should
see the style name, then.)
