no page number command

I am using Word 2000. The page number command, in the
INSERT menu, is "greyed out" and therefore, not usable.
I would appreciate any instruction as to how to retrieve
this command and make it, again, workable.

It never has been useful. Try using View >kHeaders and Footers and inserting
your page numbers directly. Otherwise, are you in a protected form?
