hi ya'll...
the style guide for a document I'm writing requires that all references
be listed numerically at the end of the document, and noted in the text
with a superscript...and fortunately, Word's "end notes" will do this
*almost* perfectly. I have only two problems with using end notes in
this fashion. the first is that the end note text only shows up when I
edit things in 'print layout view'...since I much prefer 'normal view'
I find this to be irritating & awkward, but it's not a show stopper.
however, the second problem is more troublesome...does any one know if
there is some way to eliminate the line that preceeds the list of end
notes at the end of the document? like this...
document text ends here.
------------------ (<= I want this thing to go away!)
1. this is the first end note/reference
of course, the use of end notes might not be the only way to skin this
particular cat...any method/macro for automated management of reference
numbers would be better than trying to do the task manually!
any and all advice, suggestions, tips, tricks, etc. will be gladly
accepted!
my thanks in advance...

Not a problem to do any of this in Word.
To see the Endnotes while in Normal view, clicking on View | Footnotes will
put a pane at the bottom of the window showing the notes. (Presumably you
already know this, as the pane appears automatically when you create a note
in Normal view?)
The line is called an Endnote Separator. At the top of the Footnote pane
(see above), change the View menu to Endnote Separator. Edit as desired.
You will probably also need to delete the Endnote Continuation Separator, or
it will put a line at the top of every page that continues a note from the
previous page.
Note also that it's very easy to have Word convert footnotes to endnotes and
vice versa, partially because there are times (like the View | Footnotes to
see endnotes) when Word treats the two the same. Also you can adjust the
height of the footnote pane.

Note also that if your representation of the endnotes was accurate (you want
a number [not superscript] followed by a period),
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/UnSuperscptFnotes.htm deals with this.

Oops. Didn't even notice that requirement. :)

Go to the <VIEW> menu and click on <NORMAL VIEW>. Then
go back to the <VIEW> menu and click on <FOOTNOTES>.
Notes will appear at the bottom of the screen in a
separate frame. There should be a pull down menu next to
the white cell. Select <NOTE SEPARATOR>. When the
separator appears, select it and hit Delete. Go to the
pull down menu again and select <NOTE CONTINUATION
SEPARATOR>, select and hit deleate. Hit the <CLOSE>
button and change the View back to <PAGE LAYOUT>. The
separators should be gone.
