Weird page numbers

I've created documents in Word 2000 using a template and
attached them to email
messages to my client who reports the following problem:

"all the pages show '0 of 3', or '0 of 4' or something
similar. I
tried to delete the page numbering and redid it several
times with no
effect. I even tried different ways of inserting the page
numbers. I
noticed 2 other 'odd' things. One is that the page number
in the lower
left corner of the screen shows page 0 all the time. The
other thing I
noticed is that one time I was deleting each of the
characters in the
page number, and as I deleted them, the correct page
number would
flash on the screen, and then it would go back to page 0
again".

The page numbers are correctly displayed and printed on my
computer/printer.

Has anyone encountered this problem or have any ideas on
how I can try
to correct it?

Hi,Suzanne
Thanks for the reply, but before I go down that road I'm
wondering if the fact that the page numbers display okay
when I open the documents that I created but are all "0"
of "N" when he opens them isn't the result of a different
problem....I'm using Word 2000 and he is using Word 2003.

Yes, this is most likely something different, but I have no idea what. FWIW,
*do* you have any graphics anchored inside a table in the header?

Suzanne
I followed the instructions in the link you suggested and
removed the table in the header, retaining the graphics,
and it fixed my problem.
A thousand *Thanks* you for your help.....Mike

If your layout is such that you *can* remove the table, then this is perhaps
the best solution, but it would suffice to move the graphic's anchor to the
(obligatory) text paragraph following the table.

I was given the template for the header and would not know
a graphics anchor if I saw it but I think I know what it
does.....Please explain what a *graphics anchor* is and
what it looks like and how I can find it or see where it
is.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for a picture of
an object anchor (it looks like a ship's anchor). To display object anchors,
check the appropriate box on the View tab of Tools | Options. You'll see
that the anchor is currently beside the table, but you can drag it down to
be beside the paragraph mark below the table.

Suzanne.....Thanks for the link to the tutorial.....I
followed the instructions and the nonprint characters were
displayed, but there is no object anchor to be found
anywhere.

If you've made the object inline, then there won't be an anchor, but when it
is floating (wrapped), there should be an anchor.
