Footnotes numbering after section breaks

Hello. I am working in a document with 5 chapters. Each
chapter is a separate file. After the five chapters are
merged, each of them will need to carry its own footnote
numbering (starting from 1). I will need to insert
section breaks after the end of each chapter and turn off
the "same as previous" in each header/footer for each
section to start renumbering the footnotes. Now, my
chapters also have some landscape pages for which I
needed some section breaks, right after those breaks
occur, my footnote numbering will either restart from 1
(in the middle of my chapter) or will show a number as if
I were using a continuous numbering for footnotes through
the whole document. Any suggestions on how to get a
continuous footnote numbering from the "previous section
only" within a chapter, and not from the whole document?

First of all, "Same as Previous" has nothing to do with footnotes, only
headers and footers, so don't worry about that. But experiments with section
numbering of footnotes has shown that when you have more than one section in
a chapter, you may not be able to achieve the numbering you need. You can
suppress footnotes at the end of a given section so that they will appear at
the end of the chapter, but numbering will be a problem.

Elena,

As Suzanne explained, the numbering issue may be insurmountable.  Why do you
need to merge the files?  Perhaps there is another way to accomplish what
you need without merging them.
