Does "list numbering" (Ctrl+Alt+L) need to be turned on.

I am trying to number inside a paragraph with list numbering and the
keystrokes are not working.

Is there something that isn't enabled?

Thanks in advance...

Hmm. I was unaware of that shortcut, but it's working for me here in Word
2003.

Hi,

Ctrl+Alt+L should insert a {ListNum} field.

Since the inserted ListNum field doesn't contain any switch for which List
Template to use, it picks up and continues to use whatever list template
was last used (in the paragraph or above).

If it doesn't work as expected, the currently used list template isn't set
up properly.

It's probably better to define list number styles for your numbered
paragraphs, or to use one of the built-in named list templates in the
LISTNUM fields:
{ LISTNUM "NumberDefault" },
{ LISTNUM "OutlineDefault" }, or
{ LISTNUM "LegalDefault" }

You can change the view to show field codes (Alt+F9), and replace the
existing {LISTNUM} fields:
Select and copy a listnum field with specified template (= one of the three
above) to the clipboard (Ctrl+C). Then
Find what: ^d LISTNUM
Replace with: ^c

Klaus

Using Word 2000 and Windows 2000, I can confirm that CTRL+ALT+L indeed
doesn't work (no LISTNUM field inserted), although it is listed as a
keyboard shortcut for the InsertListNumField command. Assigning a
different key combination to the command makes it work, though.

It does work here in Word2000... although the shortcut is Alt+Ctrl+Shift+L
(Alt+Ctrl+L being reserved for Layout view).
Maybe that's the problem?

Unfortunately, no. (The default shortcut for View>Print Layout on my
system is CTRL+ALT+P.)

Actually, in the Customize Keyboard dialog box, nothing happens when I
type CTRL+ALT+L, to see if these keys are assigned to something.
Still, when I look at the InsertListNumField command, it lists
CTRL+ALT+L as its shortcut. It's not really a big problem, since I
could easily assign different keys, or use CTRL+F9 and type LISTNUM,
if I wanted to use the field. But I must admit that I find it a bit
annoying that I can't explain why the shortcut doesn't work.

I have a feeling that language versions could be of importance here.
Using Swedish versions of Office 2000 and Windows 2000 (although
English menus and dialog boxes are enabled for Office), I suspect that
somehow a conflict has occurred between the factory defaults of Word
and those of Windows, as far as keyboard shortcuts are concerned.

Of course I considered a defect keyboard, but since I can use the
three keys in question for other purposes, I don't see how that could
be.

Probably. I tested in a German version.
