Page Numbers, Captions, & Index all have grey background

I don't know what I done but now my page numbers, captions, and index
all have a grey background. Even if I start a new document it does
this now. I've done everything I can think of to try to fix it to no
avail.

I installed word on a different machine and the same document that
displays the grey is normal on it. What have I done and how can I fix
it ?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View.  If "Field shading" is set to
"Always", change it to something else.
