MS Office Forum / Word / Numbering / October 2004Can't restart numbering in list
I have a document in Word 2000 with a long multi-level list. I've gotten down to item 13 at level 1 and want the next item to be "a" in level 2 but its's "c" since item 12 has an "a" and a "b". But when I go to Format\Bullets and Numbering, the Restart numbering radio button is disabled/grayed out. How can I reset the "c" back to "a"? How can I reset the "c" back to "a"? > > Roy You don't have to use heading styles (though it you're using the numbered paragraphs for headings, there are many advantages to the built-in heading styles); the principle is the same for setting up any outline-numbered list. I went ahead and added another level 2 item (which it created as "d") but it allowed me to restart numbering on this one (thus making it "a"). Then I just deleted the bad one (which was still "c"). I've had something similar happen when trying to fix up a numbering in a long document that someone had messed up. Occasionally, the numbering would 'forget' that it was continuing a list, and 'restart numbering' would be greyed out. It happened randomly, usually after between 5-12 numbers, all through a 50 page legal document. Drove me absolutely barmy, but at least I managed to fix it each time, pretty much the same way you did. Haven't seen the problem since, so there is hope yet!
