Numbered lists in a sub-document

In Word 2000 I have a master document with 14
subdocuments. This is a training guide and, therefore,
contains a ton of numbered lists. When I link the subs
into the master, the numbering continues throughout the
whole document. I have used the Restart Numbering option
in Formats>Bullets&Numbering to restart the lists (when
that option is available), but when I save the document
and then re-open it the numbering is back to being
continuous. I have since read a posting that says not to
use that Restart option but it's a little late for me
now. The master and subs all use the same template which
contains a Numbered style that defines the way I want the
lists to work.

Any ideas from anyone?

Thanks!

I found a resolution on syntagma.demon.co.uk, using the
Listnum field. This seems to be working.
