The firm I work for is looking for a third-party Word
addin to simplify outline numbering for the average user
(apparently, some people find Word's native numbering
interface too difficult to train).  Can anyone recommend a
good product?  To date, nothing I've seen gets it quite
right.  Thanks for any insight or suggestions.

Hi Christine

I can't recommend any particular third-party add-in. But no matter what
add-in you might choose, the most important thing, I think, is to create
appropriate templates for your users.

If you have a template for each kind of document that people produce (eg:
letter, fax, sales report, proposal, whatever), and the template has the
numbering set up correctly, and you train your users to apply the
appropriate styles, then most numbering problems are solved. The later the
version of Word, the more forgiving is the numbering system, and the more
functionality you have to encourage people to use the right styles.

There's more information about creating templates at

Hope this helps.

G'day "Christine" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com>,

There are 50 different ways to skin the cat. If you want to provide a
detailed spec, I am would be happy to customize some of my VBA for you
for a small fee.

With some simple customisation you should be able to use keystroke
combinations to give you a very broad range of consistent numbering.

Happy to offer WPStyles add-in (+ further customised) which offers different
base styles enabling 4 different format styles in one document.  Plus other
useful styles to be used between these styles such as bullets. Use it to
build templates from.

WPStyles is AUD$120 plus 10% GST.
Customising further is a fixed quote if you email your requirements to
janine_doconline@unwired.com.au

Kind regards
Janine
