After checking several posts regarding bullets and styles, I cannot
get Word bullets to indent properly, changing symbols with each
indention. In fact when I tab to indent, the second bullet remains
aligned with the first bullet, and the symbol does not change (only
the text indents).
As much as I would like to pick and chose my own style, I would be
very happy to revert to the default setting. I have gone to "Bullets
and Number", "Outline Numbered", where I picked the indented style...
but it doesn't work.
Can someone please advise on how I can reset my bullets and numbering
to the default setting so that tabbing within a bullet list will
indent the bullets.
Many thanks.

Try the following:
For Word 2000 and earlier: Tools | Options | Edit: "Tabs and backspace
set left indent."
For Word 2002 and later: Tools | AutoCorrect | AutoFormat As You Type:
"Set first and left indent with tabs and backspaces."
