Hi,

Using Word 2002:

I want to create styles that will put 2 auto numbers on one line. That is:

1.   (1)  Blah Blah
     (2)  More Blah
2.   (1)  And again...

Is this do-able?  All advice welcome!

Many thanks

Hi Rita

I think the neatest solution is probably to use a numbered style for the
first number, and a LISTNUM field for the second.

Set the numbered style up as a multi-level (outline) numbered style. That is,
from the Modify Style dialog, use Format > Numbering and set up both the top
level "1." numbering (linked to the style) and also the second level "(1)"
numbering, restarting after level 1.

For your lower level style, just set up an unnumbered style with the indents
you need (left indent and hanging indent to accommodate the number.)

In the list in your document, wherever you want the lower level number to
appear, insert a LISTNUM field at level 2.

To make the numbers easy to insert, you might want to save the field
(perhaps in a blank paragraph of each type) as AutoText.

There are variations on this theme you might want to explore before you
commit to a template. You could, if you don't find it confusing, link the
second level of the list format to your second level style and only use the
LISTNUM for the case with 2 numbers on the line. If you do this be sure to
set up the indents and the style linking from the *top* level style Modify
dialog, not from the second level style.

If you are likely to need to restart the top level list, then see
