Text Before Numbering

Can someone please tell me how to put text before an automatic number?

For example, I want:

Instructions: 1. Blah, blah
2. More blah
3. Etc.

but instead I keep getting things like:

1. Instructions Blah, blah

or

1. Instructions Blah, blah

Use a SEQ field for the numbering.

Thanks for your suggestion. Does what I wanted, although it seems rather a
business for what in WordPerfect would be: type the text; press indent; type
number; press indent. Subsequent lines would be: press indent; type number;
press indent.

You can still do this in Word. Everyone else has assumed that you want auto
numbering. If you want to number paragraphs manually, then you just need two
styles:

1. A style for the Instructions line. Give it a tab stop where you want the
number and a hanging indent where you want the text following the number.

2. A style for the rest of the numbered items. Give it a left indent where
you want the numbers and a hanging indent where you want the text following
the numbers.

Alternatively, you can use the same style for both, using a right tab stop
for the numbers (this might be better because it will guarantee that even
double-digit numbers will align on the period). To type the first item, type
"Instructions:," press Tab, type the number and period, press Tab, and type
the rest of the paragraph. To type items 2ff, press Tab, type the number and
period, press Tab, and type the numbered item.

Of course, you could get around all of this (and save a lot of space) by
making "Instructions" a subhead and starting your numbered list flush left
(or with a small left indent) under it. This would also allow you to take
advantage of auto numbering.
