I have a document with page numbering in the Header which I cannot remove.
When I delete it appears to be gone but when I close the Header box and check
the document the page numbering is still there. Please help.

You probably inserted the page number using Insert > Page Number (which
ought to be deleted from the menu). If so it is in a Frame in the header or
footer. You have to catch the frame (make it's outline show) and delete it
to get rid of it.
