Usually one would use either footnotes or endnotes for this. If you do not
like the default footnote format, it's still easier to use the
numbering/re-numbering function of footnotes and change the formatting.

"I want the numbers in my footnotes not to be superscripted, and I want the
numbers to be followed by a dot and a tab"

Actually, let me take that back. Cross-references to a numbered list at the
end will probably suit you just fine, and Word will update those with other
fields.

Using endnotes seems to work fine. Except the formating. The numbers are
superscripted, and I can manual change them all, but is there any way to get
them not to be superscripted.
