Consecutive Numbering

Hi,

I have had endless problems with Word's use of Numbering Systems.

The most frequent is when I have a series of Chapters for a document, all
numbered consecutively (i.e. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc) as you would expect,
with Chapter 1 beginning on page 5 (say); Chapter 2 beginning on page 17;
Chapter 3 begins on Page 44; etc.

However, sometimes I have to include a new Chapter (i.e. I may want to
include a new Chapter 2 to begin on page 17 (thus the "Old" Chapter 2 now
becomes Chapter 3).

However, on doing so, I then have to re-number the remaining Chapter
Headings (i.e. I have to change Chpater 2 to Chapter 3, Chapter 3 to Chapter
4, etc).  This problem is exacerbated by having sub-headings - e.g. 3.1; 3.2;
3.2.1; 3.2.2; etc - and can lead to an awful lot of manual changes to be made.

I presume that Word has a feature that keeps track of the numbering and can
automatically update each heading but how to I "turn it on"?  Do I need to
ensure that each heading that is numbered has some hidden "format" that tells
Word it is part of a Numbered List?

I note that sometimes the Numbering in Word is "automatic" (i.e. Inserting
"Chapter 2" in a document means that the rest of numbering from that point
onwards is automatically updated).

Many Thanks for your help,

Gary T.
