Cross-reffing multiple items from numbered list

I'm trying to cross ref multiple citations (as in [1,2,3]) from a
numbered bibliography list with the item's number in square brackets
format. It works fine for single citations (like [1] or [2]) but as the
cross-ref field brings out the item number complete with the brackets I
now have a problem with the multiple case.

Kind replies by knowledgeable people to my previous post indicate that
Word is inherently unable to suppress these brackets (see thread:
"Access just the number in cross-refs of numbered list items" at
news:1111409729.917848.139310@g14g2000cwa.googlegroups.com )

However, multi citations is customary in many journal submission
guidelines. So far all I could find are 3rd party plug-ins offering to
handle this as part of some overall citation mgmt scheme. Is there any
way for doing this directly in Word that I'm missing?

Thanks again,
iddo

Some sort of complicated find and replace involving wildcards *might* get
rid of them after the fact, though I'm not sure whether them being fields
would mess that up.
See here

if no one comes along to help you construct the F&R and no other solutions
are offered.  Actually, if what you get is [1],[2],[3] it's not even that
difficult to find "],[" and replace with ", ".  Try it.  Not sure if Find
will look inside fields, though.

Even if Find doesn't look inside fields, you might want to convert the
fields to plain text before you submit, anyhow, then run the F&R.  All that
would be on a copy, of course.
