referencing numbered lists (bullet)

I'm working on an inherited document that is several pages long. The
document is basically a list of items that are numbered (bullets).  The
document already contains some references to bulleted items by simply saying
"see #42" where the 42 is kept track of by Word, so if an item is added
before item 42, the doucment is automatically updated to read "see #43".

I can't figure it out.  I see a what looks like some kind of formula (REF),
but can't figure out how this is working... what am I missing.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Csm,
Most probably the items are cross referenced. Use Insert - Cross-reference -
To numbered item - Reference type Paragraph number
Or it could be a cross-reference to a named bookmark near the relevant text.
