How can I include just part of a numbered paragraph in a Table of
Contents in Word XP? I am using Outline Numbering linked to Heading
Styles.  Unlike Word 2000, the Marking Entry feature is not available.
I've been told to use the Style Separator. But I am having problems
with it.  Below is how I want my Table of Contents to look:

Table of Contents
I. INTRODUCTION.................1
 Section 1.01 DEFINITIONS......2
 Section 1.02 INTERPRETATION...3
II. CERTIFICATES................4
 Section 2.01 PAYING AGENT.....4
 Section 2.02 APPOINTMENT......7
--------------------------------------------
Below is how I want my document to look:

I. INTRODUCTION
Section 1.01 DEFINITIONS.  As used herein, the following terms have
the following meanings.
Section 1.02 INTERPRETATION. In this Agreement, unless otherwise
indicated or otherwise required by the context:
II. CERTIFICATES
Section 2.01 PAYING AGENT. XYZ hereby appoints the Paying Agent.
Section 2.02 APPOINTMENT. Hiring the Paying Agent will be pursuant to
the Placement Agreement

When I use the Style Separator the Outline numbering disappears.  Does
the Separator have a reputation of being a troublesome feature?  Should
I use a hidden paragraph mark instead?

I look forward to getting an answer before I commit myself.

See http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/RunInSidehead.htm (not guaranteed to
work for numbered paragraphs, though).

Thanks for your guick reply.  However, the steps on your referenced web
site works for Word 2000, not Word 2002 or Word XP.  Unless I'm missing
something.

I'm not sure which steps you're referring to, but I believe anything that
works in Word 2000 should also work in Word 2002 or 2003.

The problem I was having was not getting Alt+Shift+O to work.  But out
of sheer desperation, I selected text first then did the Alt+Shift+O
and finally the Mark Table of Contents Window appeared.  The part of
your instructions that read:  'If you select the heading text before
using this keyboard shortcut' led me to believe that it wasn't
necessary to select the text first.  Because of the little 'if' word, I
thought I had a choice as to whether or not to select the text first.
Thanks again.

The part of your instructions that reads: 'If you select the heading
text before using this keyboard shortcut' led me to believe that it
wasn't necessary to select the text first before using the Alt+Shift+O
keystroke.  But on a whim, I just tried selecting the text first before
using this keystroke and whaa laa, the Mark Table of Contents Entry
window appeared.  Thanks

FWIW, I get the Mark Table of Contents Entry dialog whether I have text
selected or not. And just in case you ever need to use the word in something
important, it's "voilà," not "whaa laa."

Thanks for helping Suzanne. I take comfort in your expertise. I wonder
if I have a setting in my Word that does not allow the Mark Table of
Contents Entry to appear after typing the Alt+Shift+O keystroke when I
don't have any selected text.

Also, have you ever used the style separator?  Any comments on it?

I have not used the Style Separator, but perhaps someone who has will be
able to help.

If you can't get outline numbering to work with the style
separator, use LISTNUM fields to number anything but the
top-level heading style.

Thanks for your answer.  I'll give it a shot.  Next question: How or
where can I learn more about LISTNUM Fields being used for this
purpose?

Start by looking at Word Help. There is also a lot of information
in the newsgroups archives at http://www.google.com.
