I'm compiling a chronology which is pure dates

1813
1814

etc

but when I insert a file the program thinks these are paragraph
numbers. How can I get around this? Think I've mentioned this before a
while ago but can't find the thread.

I'm using Word 98

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect, clear the check
box for automatic numbered lists (and also, to be on the safe side, for
"Format beginning of list item like the one before it").
