Consistent Space after Caption Number

I have captions defined with automatic numbering, and I would like to
define the spacing after consistently.

Unfortunate (1): one space is not enough space, if I define the "Follow
number with" field in the custom numbering with "space".

Unfortunate (2): if I define "Follow number with" as a tab stop, what
do I define the tab stop as since my style for the caption is centered?

Unfortunate (3): two spaces would be ideal.  I would just have the 2
spaces in the number format box, but I don't want the two spaces to
show up in a cross reference!!

I.e.: ... as shown in Figure 2-1  .

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Would it work to just add the space before your caption?

It would definitely work.  I was looking for something more automatic:
I want to provide this in a template so several authors can have
consistent output.  This solution requires everyone to manually do it
the same way.

Until MS programs more flexibility into the Caption feature, I'm afraid the
"manual" way may be the only option. Sorry.

That's the way it goes sometimes.  Thanks for the help!
