Hello,

In Word 2003 I sometimes use the Numbering and Bullet buttons on the Formatting Toolbar for some quick short numbering or bullets. I want to change the default paragraph formatting (left margin and indent) of these built-in functions. And surly, these functions must be based on built-in styles, but which ones? I've looked under Styles and Formatting and at the various styles like List Bullet and List Number, but none of them seem right.

For more serious formatting, I have my Outline numbering set up with my templates and it works very well (even if it took quite some time to learn).

You can't ever get consistent results using the Bullets and Numbering
buttons, which will apply whatever format has most recently been selected
(and it's never the one you want). You can use Ctrl+Shift+L to apply the
List Bullet style (which can be customized any way you like), and you could
also define a keyboard shortcut for List Number. Right now, Ctrl+Alt+L is
assigned to InsertListNumField; if you never want to do that, it would be a
good one for List Number.

Hello Susan and thanks for your reply.

I'm aware of the inherent problems in the two buttons (or more correctly,
their function). I only use these buttons when I write something really
simple and need a few, quick, bulleted or numbered paragraphs.

Then on the other hand, and as you say, its very easy to apply keyboard
shortcuts to any style one wants to use, as an alternative.

Once again, thank you.
