Cut and Paste into numbered list problem

I am having problems with cutting a numbered list from one document and
pasting it into another list which has styles applied.

The pasted list does not take on the list style of the destination document
if the line immediately above the list pasting into has a different style -
the pasted list takes on the style of the list on the line above.

According to the doco (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284752) a "Merge
with Existing List" should be occuring and is - but it seems to be picking up
the list on the line above the pasting resulting in a different list style
than desired.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like it's behaving as designed.  With "Merge
with Existing List" the pasted list is being merged with the destination
list (the list you're pasting into) and taking on the formatting of the
destination list - ie the point at which you're pasting into the destination
document which would become the line above the pasted material.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you.  If so, perhaps you could provide an example
of what you want vs what's happening?
