Whenever I hit the Page x of y in the header/footer toolbar, I get this:

Page []  PAGE []  of []  NUMPAGES []

The parens represent a box that shows up.

Does anyone know what is wrong?

Press Alt+F9 to switch between display of field codes (what you
see now) and field results.

I already tried that.  It is not field codes.  It puts in actual text (no
grey shading).  Almost like it is pasting a field code in as ascii text.

Someone has saved plain text as an AutoText entry. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for some tips on
dealing with this type of situation. If you don't have a lot of
customizations to lose, you could try renaming Normal.dot, which will
restore the default AutoText entries. Alternatively, you can delete the
incorrect AutoText entries and save new ones or use the Organizer to copy
them from a virgin copy of Normal.dot.
