Hi All,
Let me start with a huge thanks to all the MVPs who've gotten me this
far...

I'm using Word 2K.
I've got a multi-chapter thesis with figures. I've added captions using
Insert -> caption.  Right now, the figures are numbered with
Chapter#.Section# - Figure#... the code looks like this:
{ STYLEREF 2 \s}-{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 1 }
(in som of them, the second code is \s 2, but it doesn't seem to make a
difference)

The document isn't really big enough to justify having the section
numbers in the figure titles. In other words, it would be perfectly
fine to have the 3rd figure in the 2nd chapter be Figure 2-3, rather
than 2.1-3. Unfortunately, I can't get this to work.  It seemed to me
that I should be able to effect this by setting the first switch to
STYLEREF 1, but this just puts a 0 in the field for every chapter.

For some reason, about 1/2 of my Figures and all of my tables have this
second style in them, so it looks like I have to go through and change
them all by hand, so now seems like a good time to try to understand
this if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks!

1. Make sure that numbering is correctly defined for your heading
styles, as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

2. In the Caption dialog, select the Figure label and click the
Numbering button. Specify that the numbering of Heading 1 should be
included in your Figure captions. This makes Word change the field
codes to look like this:

  { STYLEREF 1 \s }-{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 1 }

Of course, you can edit the settings directly in the field codes, but
that would be time-consuming. Also note that whenever you look into
the Caption Numbering dialog box, those settings would take precedence
over direct modifications to field codes.

3. Select the entire document, and press F9 to update field display.
