Go to File Page Setup.
On the dialog that appears, click the Layout tab
Check the "Different odd and even pages" box.
You now have different odd and even page headers and footers. You can insert
page numbers on the right in one and on the left in the other.

Jonathan has told you the "correct" way to do this, but for a simple
document with no header/footer text except for page numbers, use the Insert
| Page Numbers command and choose Outside for the Alignment. There are
certain liabilities to this quick-and-dirty method, but you're unlikely to
run into them in a document that doesn't require a lot of editing (or any
other header/footer material).
