Is it possible to remove the numbering completely. I want to insert pictures
into a document and have user defined text, not numbering sequence or figure
1 etc. U cannot see a way to disable this automatic numbering? Can anyone
help please?

Not if you use Insert | Caption, but you can apply the Caption style to your
figure caption (or use any other style you choose for your captions) and
then build a Table of Figures based on that style.

Instead of using Insert>Reference>Caption, just type the caption text
in. If you want it to be formatted like "automatic" captions, apply
the Caption paragraph style.
