If you're talking about hitting tab and getting to the next number level,
same question from me.
I'm sure at one point, using Word 2003, that when I hit the tab key, the
next numbering level was executed. Now when I hit tab, the text just goes to
the next tab setting. To go to the next numbering level I have to click on
the indent button.

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options, check the
box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."

This option (slightly differently worded) used to be on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options; the new location stymies a lot of users.
