Caption numbering non-sequential

Is it possible to set up a caption and choose the numbering for yourself so
that it is non-sequential?

For instance I want my captions to be Narrative 210-0001, Narrative
325-0056, Narrative 001-0002. Then I'd like to be able to cross reference
these narratives and numbers in other parts of the document.

You can do it, but it will require some manual labor :-)

You'd need to type in all the captions manually. Then select the part of the
caption you want to show up in the cross-references and Insert/Bookmark. Type
in a meaningful name (that must start with a letter and may not contain
"special characters"). When you create cross-references, these will be listed
under "bookmarks".
