MS Office Forum / Word / Numbering / May 2006Numbering Appendices
We would like for our appendix page numbers to look like: A-1, A-2, A-3,...; B-1, B-2, B-3...; C-1, C-2, C-3..., etc. And we want them to appear in the TOC as such, automatically. I can't get this to work in Word 2003, even after trying the steps in the Help topic "Restart page numbering for each chapter." The instructions for "Include chatper numbers along with page numbers" doesn't work for me because of the requirement that I use one of the 9 built-in header styles in defining the chapter numbering. Since the rest of the chapters in the document use 1, 2, 3, etc., if I try changing any one header to use A, B, C, etc., it changes ALL the headers (of every level) throughout the doc. However, it doesn't address the problem of all the headers getting updated when I update just Header 6 with numbering. If I add a border to Header 6, it doesn't update the rest of the headers (1-5). But if I modify bullets/numbering, it adds the same modification to all the builtin headers. So, I tried going back and modifying headers 1-5 to set numbering to "None." Great, that appeared to work. But that step removed all my appendices from the TOC. Any ideas? TIA, > > Susie Okay, at this point your issue is not the idea of using different headings for your appendixes but how to set up your outline numbering; you need to assign a different numbering level to each heading level, and they all need to be part of the same outline-numbered list. Is it possible to change that? I'd like to go back to a TOC that shows only H1, H2, and H6. But I don't want H6 to be at such a low level, if you know what I mean. The main trick is that you will almost certainly need to tweak the TOC field by hand, though a lot of what you want can be achieved in the TOC Options dialog. BTW, I find it confusing when you refer to headings as headers in a Word NG (I know that's what they're called in HTML, but that's not where we are). A header is something that repeats at the top of the page. SignatureSuzanne S. Not enough coffee! You've been a big help. I set Heading 6 to use Level 2 (or 3?) but had to create a separate TOC to keep Headings 3, 4 & 5 out of the TOC. But that's OK because it worked! I will go look at the TOC link you sent me to figure out how to go about getting to the Options dialog for one particular TOC in a document that has multiple TOCs. Thanks so much, Suzanne. TIA, > > > > > > Susie It should not be necessary to have a separate TOC for the appendixes, though I often do that because I want to omit page numbers for them (since the documents I create often just have title pages for the appendixes, which are miscellaneous stuff inserted by the client on his end). If you'll pay close attention to the articles I referenced, you'll see that you can choose the styles you want included in your TOC and the level at which you want them displayed. Deselecting the ones Word includes automatically (based on outline level) takes care of the rest. Or you can (once you've studied the method) hand-code the TOC field. SignatureSuzanne S.
