Please see the below format

1 Intoduction

1.1 Scope

1.2Items

.............................

2 Contents

2.1 Materials

.........................

2.2 Modules

......................

....
...
...
I want to auto number in this format, as i am newbie to word please
help me how to autoformat, one more thing when i want to insert
anything in between these headers, the next number should be auto
generated.

Hi meendar,

Check out Word's heading styles - they're designed to do exactly this sort
of thing.

note that if you choose the second pane in the second row of the Outline
Numbered list gallery, you will have the numbering you describe linked to
Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on.
