I am using Word 2003

Thank you both for your help.  I did try to follow the article that Charles
pointed me to.  I have the outline set up the way I want it, but am still
having problems with the numbering.  Per Suzanne, I went back to check the
"Previous Level number" (PLN) box.  On each level I checked the previous
level in that box.  But nothing shows up in the box after I have picked a
level.  For example, for level 3, I opened the "PLN" box.  There was a list -
Level 1 and level 2   I chose (clicked on) level 2.  But when I left the box
level 2 does not show up in the box.  Is it suppose to?  I tried one click
and two clicks but nothing show up.

Any other ideas?

I am not the expert on this. My recollection is that all editing of the list
template is done from the Modify Style dialog for the level one style. This
includes editing of the template to be applied by level two-nine styles. If
you start editing directly you break the linkages. Again, this is my
recollection and I could be way off.

You need to follow the steps I outlined exactly as I stated them. Be aware
that nothing will ever show in that box, but if you have done this
correctly, the numbers will be correct.
