On my home computer in numbered lists beginning at, say, 1, when I go to the
next line I get 2, which is expected. Hitting the TAB key, however, doesn't
advance to the next level, "a." 2 stays in place and an extra tab marker goes
in instead. Oddly, my office computer DOES advance to the next level when I
hit TAB. I've done everything I know to do to make the TAb go to the next
level. I've reset everything. I've compared my home settings to my office and
they appear to be the same. There must be something really simple that I'm
overlooking, but I can't find it. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Herb answered your question. But note also that you can use
Alt+Shift+right arrow to demote (and Alt+Shift+left arrow to promote)
numbering levels.

Both of these responses answered my query, and I'm grateful. --EWL
