MS Office Forum / Word / Numbering / September 2006can I use 2 different types of numbering in an index
I am using Word 2003 at work. We have a "Closing Binder Index" that was already set up with automatic # using Heading1, Heading2 and Heading3. It is ONLY an Index and there are no other pages in the document. I want to use automatic # on the right side for the TAB (so far we are at TAB 153). I tried LISTNUM but it resets the TAB # back to 1 when it is used at Heading3 in the Index. I thought about taking out the automatic # on the left side of the document and use LISTNUM for the TAB #. The Index will be changing a lot and typing the TAB # manually is time consuming (3-4 people will be updating it). What should I do to have it number sequentially? Heading2......................3 D. Heading2.....................4 This is actually a TOC rather than an index. If it is based on headings that are in other documents, you can use an RD field to generate it. See http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=148. If this is not feasible, you could use one or more SEQ field sequences. SEQ fields don't update automatically but can be updated with F9, and you can repeat any number by adding a \c switch to the field. See Word's Help topic "Field codes: Seq (Sequence) field." Heading2.....................4 Suzanne, I used the SEQ field and it worked. I read up on it and figured it out after 1-1/2 hours. I have tried, off and on, for 3+ years to use fields for numbering and this is the first time it worked successfully, I did not even think to use SEQ.
