MS Office Forum / Word / Numbering / November 2006No numbering wanted on first level
Is it possible to set up numbering in Word so that the level 1 doesn't actually have a number, but level 2 still has a number for level 1? Like this: Some text here on the first level 1.1 ... 1.2 ... 1.3 ... Some other text on the first level 2.1 ... 2.2 ... Some more text on the first level 3.1 ... 3.2 ... Yes. Set up the normal 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 series of outline numbering. Then, on Level 1, click Font... to format the numbering as Hidden; set "Follow number with" to "Nothing" and "Indent at" to 0". The number will of course be displayed if you have Hidden text displayed but will not print unless you print Hidden text. A good idea to hide Hidden text before generating TOC, index, etc., to make sure pagination is correct. SignatureSuzanne S. It wouldn't be an issue if you had only the Heading 1 text at Level 1. What is the other paragraph style you're using TOC Level 1 for? If it's something like a part title, could you use Level 1 for it, Level 2 for Heading 1, etc.? Or, since your Headings 1s are centered, could you perhaps center the TOC entries as well? You'd still have the two types of Level 1 entries slightly offset from each other, but it wouldn't be as obvious. SignatureSuzanne S.
