I have grayed out buttons on my outline tool bar the split, merge, lock
buttons and others are not available? Also I thought there was a way to open
an outline file condensed, I can save the document condensed but when I open
it is fully expanded?

The commands you are referring to are for master documents only (which
I don't use). If you are in fact using a master document, something
could be wrong with it; see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/RecoverMasterDocs.htm and
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm.

The view (including the zoom ratio) will be saved with a document;
however, collapsed paragraphs in Outline view will not be retained. I
don't think there is a way around this besides using a macro, which
you would have to ask for in a programming newsgroup.
