Hi,
I use Word 2003 and when I define the caption with insert/references/
Caption/tables, I get the right number "table 3-1 xxxxxxxx" until I
push ok, then it writes to table 0-1 xxxxxxxxx.

It seems that the other captions for figures and tables in chapter 4-8
are OK.
I looked at seq but they are the same. This caption does not appear in
the table of tables.

Thanks for all help
Georg

Check if you have a blank paragraph where the Heading 1 style has been
applied but numbering has been suppressed. If so, the caption
(actually the STYLEREF field component of the caption) tries to
reference that blank paragraph which displays as zero.

Delete the blank paragraph and then update the caption by selecting it
and pressing F9.

Note: To get spacing between paragraphs, instead of pressing Enter
twice, use Spacing Before or After (Format | Paragraph); this
formatting can be added to a paragraph style.

Thanks Stefan,

unfortunately I don´t get it how to do, sorry. I have:

Link level to style: Heading 1
Follow number with: Tab Character, changed to nothing, but didn't work
after updating with F9
ListNum field list name: empty

I have Chapter 1  -> Paragraph
----- = this empty place, is semidark, but
don't know to handle

Sorry again,
Georg

Click the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. Are there any paragraph
marks (¶) not preceded with text? For example:

text here¶
¶       <-- This is a blank paragraph
This is some more text that
wraps to the next line.¶

If you find a blank paragraph, note the style it is using. If you find
one that is using the Heading 1 paragraph, apply a different
(unnumbered) style or delete the paragraph. Then update the caption
fields (select the whole document and press F9).

Does that help?

Thank you Stefan!!!

you were right there was a blank paragraph that caused the problem.
After deleting the paragraph and applying F9 to the whole document, it
works fine.

Best regards
Georg
