Numbering Issues

I was brought a document to get the proper numbers on each page.   When ever
I go to start a new section it continues off the old numbering.  I can't get
it to change this.  I am currently at 117(j).  I need to go 118(a-i).  If I
go to the next page and put 118 in, it puts it all through the 117's.  I
have a 124 pages to fix, and section 118, I can hopefully get this fixed as
I think it is the same issue through the whole document..  Thanks in
advance.

While it is not necessary to unlink headers/footers to change the number
format or restart numbering, it is necessary if you want to change anything
else about the header/footer. This would include omitting the number
entirely (a common request) as well as adding a letter of some sort to the
number, which appears to be what you're doing.

Okay, how do I go about unlinking them.  The document counts fine up until
117(j), but if I go about trying to go on to 118, it puts that in all the
footers.  I guess I can't figure out how the original author numbered it or
formatted the headers or footers, but the document has to fit a certain
format, and cannot be altered...  I have it corrected up until the 117(j),
but it was also the first part of the document with subsections.   Any ideas
or help would be appreciated..  Thanks

View | Header and Footer in the appropriate section and click the "Link to
Previous" or "Same as Previous" button on the Header and Footer toolbar to
unlink the header/footer from the previous section. For more, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm.

It sounds, though, as if your issue is with the numbering itself. Click the
Format Page Number button on the H&F toolbar and make sure the numbering is
set to "Continue from previous section." Also, if you're actually seeing 118
on every page, make sure that what you have is a PAGE field and not just
plain text.

I actually went through and hit those buttons already in View - Header and
Footer.  It is actually the numbering itself I am having the issue with.  I
went and checked the"continue from a previous section, and it throws my
numbers off even worse.  Is there anyway I can delete all numbering format
and start over?  Any more suggestions to try?  Thanks again for your help.

If the numbering is up to 117 in the previous section, it should start with
118 in the current section, but you can go back to Section 1 and make sure
that each subsequent section has "Continue from previous section" selected.
Use the Show Next button on the H&F toolbar to advance from section to
section and use Format Page Number in each one.
