I am putting together a thesis with front matter. I have the front matter and
body of the manuscript numbered differently, but of the ten pages of front
matter, I need the first two pages and last two pages of it unnumbered. How
can I do that? I have created section breaks but if I add or delete page
numbers in any of the sections, all of the page numbers disappear or page
numbers appear on the four pages I need unnumbered. I apologize if this has
already been asked. Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

The missing piece of information is that you need to unlink the
headers/footers you need to leave blank. See
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm for more.
