I am using Word 2002 SP3
I am an infrequent user. I am very conversant with Access and VBA if
that helps because I am aware that code can be used in a text box to
give page numbers,
The Problem.
I have inherited a document that is published annually and I need to
use the existing format and update some of the data.
The first 96 pages are vertical format, a continuous break is in use
and the rest of the pages are horizontal.
At that point the page numbering starts again.
I have found some "Continuous break - next page" which when removed
makes page one with a number 200.
I am very confused.
Thanks,

1. Place the insertion point in Section 2 (the landscape section).
2. View | Header and Footer.
3. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the button for Format Page
Number.
4. Choose "Continue from previous section." OK. Close.

I have now performed a 'find and replace' on all section breaks and
the number system is correct.

What did you replace the section breaks with? If you replaced them with
nothing, that is, deleted them, you lost all section-level formatting
(page orientation, margins, and so on).
There are some side-effects to this. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/WorkWithSections.htm.
What Suzanne suggested was a less drastic approach. :-)
