Outline Numbering Issues

I'm creating an outline numbering scheme for our firm for some docs that we
use very frequently. I can get the outline numbering customized and when I
type in new information it works great. BUT if i copy any information from
another document in...it totally messes up. I also wanted to add the
numbering to styles so it could be applied to existing docs but that isn't
working either.

You've probably already seen
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. If not,
read and follow it carefully. When you paste information in from other
documents, apply your numbered styles, and Ctrl+Q if necessary, and you
should be good.

I have read it. I guess where I'm getting stuck is the heading piece. The
outline numbering was already set up so what do I do about the headings?
Even I try to create new heading styles it seems to work until I actually try
to apply them...then it deletes the entire piece of text. It does it on all
levels.

And when I paste things in...it deletes the text when I apply the style

I'm not sure I understand how applying a style could delete text unless the
text in question was itself part of a numbered style ("Chapter 1," for
example).
