Can anyone tell me if it is possible to create a table of contents but not
store it in the document from which it was made?

If you just want to lift the TOC out, copy/paste into another document and
immediately Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink the field. If you want to create a TOC
spanning multiple documents, see
