Hi,
I would like to know how to insert page numbers in my document but starting
on the second page and starting with the number 1,2 3, ect.. I have put in
"section break" in the bottom of the first page and have been able to insert
page numbers starting with no. 1 on the second page BUT on the first page no.
1 also figures - that is no. 1 on the first and second page. -- How can I get
the page number off the first page .... and starting the second with no. 1 ???
Thanks

You have to unlink the footers; then you can delete the page number field in
the first section. Place the insertion point in the footer of the second
section. In Word 97-2003, click the Same as Previous / Link to Previous
button on the Header and Footer toolbar, to turn the setting off. In Word
2007, with the insertion point inside the footer, you'll see a Header &
Footer Tools: Design tab on the ribbon. Turn off the Link to Previous option
(in the Navigation group).
Note that a section can have up to three different footers (and three
different headers), if you enable the "Different first page" and "Different
odd and even" options in the Page Layout dialog box. If this is the case,
the Link to Previous setting must be turned off separately for each type of
footer (header). For more, see

Hi Stefan,
thanks for your quick reply.
I worked ... partly ... I have removed the footer/page number on the first
page but now I only have page number (no. 1) on the secons page and not on
third and so on.
How can I fix that ??

Is "Different first page" enabled for the second section?
By the way, which version of Word is this?

Hi Jan,
Here's a relatively simple way, if your document doesn't have anything fancy like a 'proper' Table of Contents or Page#
cross-references:
1. Select the page footer
2. Press Ctrl-F9 twice to create a pair of nested fields, thus '{{}}'
3. Fill in and around the field braces, thus: '{={PAGE}-1 \# 0;;}'
4. Press F9 to update.
What is does is to create a formula field that subtracts 1 from the actual page No. and suppress the result if it's 0.
Cheers

But note that calculated page numbers will not be reflected in a table of
contents field (or in cross-references).

Which is why I qualified my answer with "if your document doesn't have anything fancy like a 'proper' Table of Contents or Page#
cross-references".

You certainly did. I wonder why I didn't notice that yesterday? :-(
Sorry!

I wondered, too. But in this specific case it's so much easier just to start
the numbering from 0 that I would opt for that method instead, anyway.

For this instance only (it won't work to start with a higher page number or
more blank pages):
1. On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for "Different first
page."
2. View | Header and Footer to open the header pane.
3. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Format Page Number.
4. Set the "Start at" number to 0. Click OK.
5. Click the Show Next button on the H&F toolbar (if necessary) to go from
the First Page Header to the Header.
6. Click the Switch Between Header and Footer button (if desired) to put the
page number in the footer.
7. Use the Insert Page Number button on the H&F toolbar to insert your page
number in the header or footer. Use the built-in tab stops or paragraph
alignment to position the number.
Note that no section breaks are needed and page numbers will be correct in
the TOC, index, etc. Note also that you can accomplish the same thing in the
Insert | Page Numbers dialog by clearing the "Show number on first page"
check box and setting the starting number to 0 (click Format... to get to
the Page Number Format dialog).
