Word 2007 - Multi level list exits leaving incorrect style

I have created a style based multi-level list where the outline levels are
based on linked styles.  If I remain at the first level and exit the list
(using an enter) all works fine, the document returns to the prior normal
font (style).  If I progress deeper than level 1 and I remain within the
list, the paragraph styles follow the list levels (as expected).  The issue
is now when the list is exited the paragraph style is / becomes a level 2
paragraph style.  It is simple enough to just change the paragraph style
back to the body style; but it would be nice if the list exited cleanly.
Any suggestions?

You can change the "Style for following paragraph" setting for the relevant
paragraph styles in the Modify Style dialog box.

Alternatively, if you are trying to apply the Normal style, just use the
Ctrl+Shift+N shortcut. That should quickly "end" the list.

Thanks Stefan.

That is how we have been terminating the list (actually I had attached Alt
+A to the base document style - careless use of the term "Normal Style".).

Further thought on the matter is that there is some sense to it.  If the
first level is based on <no style>,  when exiting the list with Enter /
Return, Word picks up the last style used.  If you at the first level, the
prior style was the base document style.  If you were deeper in the list as
you back out the last defined style was the style at level 2.

Sorry to was everyones time.

Indeed, the "Style for following paragraph" applies to *paragraph* styles
only. If you don't include a particular paragraph style for a level of a
numbered list, the current style will remain applied to text.
