I did have that box unchecked when setting the number at the style level. But
I wish this didn't need to be at the style level, but only at the paragraph
level. In other words, make *this* paragraph number 4, not the style. Anyway,
re-opening the document is re-imposing the template and losing those settings.
Can you think of any other mechanism besides the "automatic update" that's
doing this? Thanks.

No, if "Automatically update..." is cleared, templates should not be able to
modify the documents. You could try setting up the numbered lists again,
preferably as explained at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. You may
also want to check if macros, for example in an add-in, could be affecting
the numbering. Beyond that, I have no more suggestions.
