Numbering out of sync

Hi all,

I'm using Word 2004 with a step numbering scheme implementing using outline
numbering (since it uses multiple levels of numbering, such as 1, 2, 2.a,
2.b, 3, etc).

It works well except that occasionally, such as when I update new styles,
the restart numbering functionality doesn't work as expected.

If I expect the following:

1. Step 1.
2. Step 2.
3. Step 3.

Interim text.

1. Step 1. <-- This step has "restart numbering" previously applied to it.
2. Step 2.
3. Step 3.

I instead get:

1. Step 1.
2. Step 2.
3. Step 3.

Interim text.

1. Step 1. <-- This step has "restart numbering" previously applied to it.
4. Step 2.
5. Step 3.

That is, only the first step is any sequence has the correct number - the
remainder follow the numbering scheme specified in the very first sequence.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

P.

It is not uncommon for numbering restarts to be lost when you update a
style. Try modifying the style via the Modify Style dialog box instead.

Hi Stefan,

When I update new styles in a document, it's always from an updated template (turning on, then off "Automatically update document styles"). If I do this, is there no way to keep the numbering as previously set?

Sorry, I misunderstood; I thought you were referring to the update to match
selection feature.

In a quick test, "Automatically update document styles" seems to work
correctly (tested in Word 2007), that is, it doesn't affect manual restarts
of numbering.

Which version of Word are you using? Did you make sure to set up numbering
carefully using styles?

Is the problem with just one document, or can you reproduce it in any
document attached to the same template?

This is in Word 2003. I created the numbering based on Shauna Kelly's page:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

The same problem occurs in all docs based on the template.

Since you have been following Shauna Kelly's instructions, numbering should
be correctly defined; that much we know. It could be a problem with Word
2003 (which I don't have installed to test at the moment).

Have you done any testing to see if you can reproduce the issue with a
*different* template (and different documents, of course)?
