I am not the most proficient in using Word, however, I sent a client a 14
page word document, ~40 numbered paragraphs.  This of course was in markup
mode to allow them to make any changes etc.  When I got it back, with
changes, the numbering was 1-8 and where paragraph 9 was supposed to be was
numbered 4 and sequenced up from there.  Some subparagraphs were not
numbered originally, but were a combination of a,b,c and i,ii etc.  The next
process was to add to/change some of the comments, and at the same time
re-number the entire document and send back my changes etc.  I wanted to do
this without further adding my changes of numbering etc and present a
"clean" document with only the latest changes.  As I accepted/rejected, some
paragraphs completely changed format, fonts changed, indentions etc, as I
got towards the bottom of the document, "automatic" renumbering reverted
back to previous numbers etc.  About 2 hrs later, I finally got it cleaned
up and do not want to go thru this again.  I know the client performed some
"witchery" on the document, but what would be the best approach if this
happens again.  Do you have to delete the old numbering system before you
apply the new numbering system without going thru and accepting each one?
TIA

As a general rule, numbering in a document is never stable or correct until
all changes have been accepted, so just keep that in mind.

That is the approach that I will use in the future.  I appoliged to the
client, telling them that the numbering would be "stabilized" on the final
document.  They were ok with that.
