How remove ToC heading from ToC itself?

Hi, me again...

First of all, is this a real Word Numbering or a Word Tables question?

I'm thinking it's numbering, since it's a more automated problem, and not a
generic Word table problem.

For some reason, I'm generating a heading for Table of Contents (shows up as
ToC 1) IN the Table of Contents!

How do I get rid of it?

Thanks!

Make sure that the TOC heading has an outline level of Body Text. What I
generally do is create a special style (with Body Text outline level) just
for the TOC head.

Sorry, how do I get to the Outline level?  I highlighted the ToC (title
style), and went to styles/modify... then numbering. Every numbering type is
turned off... I remember getting to the outline level once before, but can't
remember how now...

Thanks!

In the TOC Head itself, right-click and choose Paragraph. In the Paragraph
dialog (upper right-hand corner), change the outline level from Level 1 (or
whatever) to Body Text.

OK, well it's already set to Body Text.

In that case, what style is it in? Is there a number beside that style in
the TOC Options?

Well, it's (the Table of Contents heading itself) coming up in the "Title"
style, which is as it should, right?  And no, no number as part of it.  Now
TOC options is some other table/menu I haven't gone to, however... but can
you get to that w/out going thru the Insert pull-down?  (I don't wanna
re-insert, I want to modify...)

The Title style should properly be used for the title of the document. By
default, the Title style has an outline level of 1. So, in the TOC Options
dialog, you must find Title and remove the 1 from beside it.

OK, but how/where do I get to the TOC options dialog?  It's already in
existence, so I can't re-create it.

OK, I think I found how to edit the ToC stuff. I highlighted the whole ToC,
right-clicked, chose Edit field, then chose the Table of Contents/ToC, and
then the Modify button.  But then it shows in the Styles field, TOC 1. Is
that where I remoive the '1'?  If so, how come another document is working
CORRECTLY w/ that same setting?  (Doesn't give the bogus Table of Contenst as
a false heading in the table itself)

No, don't click Modify, click Options. Or you can remove it from the style
directly by using Format | Style. Find Title, then Modify, Format |
Paragraph and set the outline level to Body Text. Or, as I think I have
suggested before, do this in the TOC head itself: right-click and choose
Paragraph and change the outline level.

OK, then doing what I said below, but then choosing Options, I get '1'
showing for ToC.  There's a box there, saying "Outline levels", which is
unchecked.  Doesn't seem to be an ass'n w/ any of the "available styles"
listed, and no indication of Body Text.

I went to your link (thx!), and revisited how to CREATE a ToC, but it gives
no indication how to add the title to it!  (I regenerated it using
Insert/etc...)

Sorry we're going round and round w/ this, but we seem to have a failure to
communicate! I think what I'm gonna do is what i often do (that usually
works): copy a ToC which is BEHAVING over the area that's not, and then
re-format/re-generate.

There is a 1 beside the Title style in the list of styles in the TOC Options
dialog (see Figure 3 in the referenced article). Delete the 1.

Or format the Title style or TOC head paragraph itself to have a Body Text
outline level (see Figure 1 in the referenced article). All the information
you need is in that article if you will just read it carefully.

OK, well I will review it in more detail. But your 2nd way to do this here, I
have already verified: I went to 'Paragraph' on the Title, and it already
showed Body Text. I'm thinking this is some glitch/bug...

Until I get time to REALLY (and correctly) fix this, however, I just
"cheated."  I did a "Clear Formatting" style on the Title, and re-formatted
it to LOOK like a Title (altho it no longer is), and re-genned the ToC.  I
faked it out and it works fine! (looks that way, anyway...)

Well, that was among my initial suggestions. I usually create a style for
this purpose, however. The reason that just changing the outline level in
the paragraph won't work, I now realize, is that, once you've actually
generated the TOC, the Title style is marked as outline level 1 in the TOC
Options, so just changing the outline level on the paragraph itself won't
help; it would have to be changed in the style and the TOC regenerated.

OK, thx!  I'll stop bugging you now, and consider my question answered!  :-)
